London Elections 2012

The London Mayoral and Assembly elections took place on 3rd May 2012.

Boris Johnson was re-elected as Mayor of London and the London Assembly elections resulted in an Assembly composed of 12 Labour, 9 Conservative, 2 Green and 2 Liberal Democrat party members. Jeanette Arnold (Labour) has been appointed Chair and Darren Johnson (Green) Deputy Chair of the London Assembly.

The Mayor has recently appointed:

Assembly Member, Kit Malthouse, as Deputy Mayor for Business

Assembly Member, James Cleverly, as Chair of the London Fire and Emergency Planning Authority

Leader of LB Hammersmith & Fulham, Stephen Greenhalgh, as Chair of the Mayor's Office for Policing and Crime (an appointment that needs to approved by the London Assemb;y's Police & Crime Committee).

LVSC through its Policy Forum has worked to involve London's voluntary and community sector in the elections by arranging roundtable events with three of the Mayoral election candidates:
Jenny Jones - Green
Brian Paddick - Liberal Democrat
Ken Livingstone - Labour
and with the Deputy Mayor, Richard Barnes - Conservative.

London VCS roundtables with Mayoral candidates

We used these discussions to develop a set of asks for London Mayoral candidates from London's voluntary and community sector
Asks for London Mayoral candidates

Download the document below to see how well the Green, Liberal Democrat, Labour and Conservative manifestos deliver against these asks.

Roundtable with Richard Barnes

Jenny Jones has written a very informative blog about her impressions from the roundtable. She states that the sector 'needs funding not cuts' and includes the following quote:

"Prevention is key, and it is better to spend more now, so we will have to pay less later. I really take my hat off to these voluntary and community organisations who are an invaluable asset to London."

Other VCS work on the elections

LVSC also supported policy proposals in "Building a London Fit for Families", developed by the Family Friendly London group, and "My Fair London", developed by the London Equality Trust..

Follow up after the elections

LVSC will be writing to the Mayor and all London Assembly members to follow up on prgress towards the asks we developed before the election.
