Single Equality Bill

Key signposts for information on the development of the Single Equality Bill

The Equality Bill Alliance

In 2009, six voluntary organisations, from across the English regions, with a commitment to equality of opportunity and human rights came together to form an informal alliance to discuss the Equality Bill, race equality and the general and specific equality duties.

The six organisations are Afiado, The Race Equality Centre, Just West Yorkshire, Equanomics UK, Migrant Workers North West and 1990 Trust.

The Equality Bill has its second reading in the House of Lords on the 15th December. Since Parliament rises for its Christmas and new Year from 16/12/09 – 5/1/10, the second reading may or may not be concluded before Christmas.

Key developments with respect to the Equality Bill and the public sector equality duties in particular can be seen in the briefing from the Equality Bill Alliance below.

Winning the Race Coalition

Race on the Agenda (ROTA) has formed a national coalition of Third Sector bodies to influence and inform the Single Equality Bill and increase awareness around it and other race equality legislation.

The Coalition was set up with the support of other Black, Asian and minority ethnic (BAME) organisations such as Voice4Change England and the Runnymede Trust.

The focus is primarily on race equality and the discrimination faced by BAME groups. However, the Coalition aims to make the argument for cross-equality and human rights issues where appropriate. This is especially relevant in relation to the proposed specific duties for public authorities in implementing the proposed Single Equality Duty.

ROTA and the Coalition members have been working, and will continue to work, over the duration of all the stages of the Bill to engage with key stakeholders involved in ensuring that the needs of BAME communities and the BAME Third Sector are met.

For further information go to the ROTA website.

During the Discrimination Law Review and the early stages of the development of the Single Equality Bill LVSC worked in partnership with Race on the Agenda (ROTA), London Civic Forum, HEAR (the London equalities and human rights network) and Third Sector Alliance to consult with and inform London's VCS on the government's main proposals for the Single Equality Bill.
