Sources of funding

The sources and amounts of funding available to voluntary and community groups are constantly changing.

Government policy has a significant influence on the nature and extent of funding available at any given time.

Organisations should avoid focusing on just one source and try accessing a wide range of different types of funding instead.

This will help the organisation manage its growth and develop sustainable services.

Organisations access money and resources from the following areas:

  • Local and central government
  • Lottery distributors and public appeals (such as the Big Lottery Fund, Comic Relief, BBC Children in Need)
  • Trusts and foundations
  • Donations, payroll giving, gift aid and legacies
  • Companies and small businesses
  • Trading and investments

If you are new to fundraising it is recommended that you seek advice before you start.
