Focus on London Wildlife Trust
This focus is on the Greenway Project which London Wildlife Trust is carrying out in the London Borough of Newham.
Every Tuesday a group of volunteers work to selectively remove invasive species such as buddleia, bramble, small sycamore trees and clear accumulated litter along this unique green corridor.
A major priority is to engage the local community, enabling them to discover and enhance this local green space for both people and wildlife, including also, for example, participating in native hedgerow planting projects, making and installing bird and bat nesting boxes.
Volunteers can develop personal skills in team building, leading work groups, gaining confidence. Training in health and safety, the use of hand tools, land management and practical conservation will be given. Clothing and sturdy footwear suitable for the work should be worn and volunteers should bring a packed lunch, refreshments are provided during the work day.
We normally meet at West Ham tube station at 10am each Tuesday and then go to site which is about 5 - 10minutes walk along the Greenway - details are confirmed each week.
Travel costs will be reimbursed if a ticket or print-out (eg Oyster PAYG) is provided.
Please e-mail the Greenway Conservation Officer, Shaun Marriott at smarriott@wildlondon.org.uk or call 02078034276 for more information.
London Wildlife Trust and partners are working together to transform this route into a cleaner, safer route for pedestrians and cyclists, attracting a more diverse range of wildlife.
